Destination Mozambique

an untouched destination of paradisiacal beaches, wildlife and ancient culture.

A hidden gem in East Africa

Mozambique is home to paradisiacal beaches with white sand dunes and colorful fish that stand out from the turquoise sea. Added to its natural beauty is the rich African culture and the joy of a welcoming people.

Although the Portuguese language is official in the country, the Mozambican people preserve their roots in more than 40 dialects originating from the Bantu family.

At first, the rich local fauna and flora is what catches the eye of travelers. Throughout its extension there are three distinct types of vegetation: dense forest, forest and savanna, and mangroves. From the same point of view, there is the abundant wildlife that can be enjoyed on the safaris offered in the country.

Sights — What to visit in Mozambique

Maputo

Wide avenues lined with red acacias and lilac jacaranda trees make Maputo one of the most beautiful capitals on the African continent. It is recognized as the heart of Mozambique for its economic activity and is divided between the Mediterranean buildings of the old city and modern buildings on the waterfront.

Capital of Mozambique, Maputo is a city that will serve as a reference for travelers to understand the country's ethnic and cultural diversity.

What to do in Maputo

  • Central Market: also known as the Maputo Bazar, it sells a little bit of everything: fruits, spices, objects for personal use and also souvenirs. It is located in the lower city region and is also frequented by local residents.
  • Central Railroad Station (CFM): built in 1916, it is an example of Beaux-Arts architecture and still makes some trips today, such as the Maputo-Pretoria route, and houses an interesting museum with permanent and temporary exhibitions.
  • Fortaleza de Maputo: built by Portuguese colonizers to protect against invaders, today it houses a military history museum and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city.

Bazaruto Archipelago

Clear waters in a unique shade of turquoise make the Bazaruto Archipelago a true haven. Formed by 5 main islands, in this region the traveler can find multicolored fish, wild dolphins and sea turtles, as well as several species of birds and pink flamingos.

What to do in the Bazaruto Archipelago

  • Snorkeling/diving: with the great diversity of colorful fish and corals, this is one of the best activities to enjoy in the region. As a result, it's common to spot sea turtles, dolphins, and even whales in the waters off Bazaruto.
  • Visiting a local community: thanks to its responsible tourism policy, Mozambique receives few travelers and keeps its ancient customs alive. A visit to the village of Vilanculo will provide a dive into this unique East African community.

Quirimbas Archipelago

A group of 32 paradisiacal islands make up the Quirimbas Archipelago. The white sandy beaches and turquoise sea attract the attention of honeymooners, who can also enjoy an almost untouched nature. As in all of Mozambique, the cuisine in the region is a separate attraction and is worth enjoying.

What to do in the Quirimbas Archipelago

  • Water activities: snorkeling, diving, kayaking and SUP are highly recommended activities in the region, the clear waters of Quirimbas add a touch of exclusivity to the experience.
  • Cruise: the calm sea and gentle breeze of Quirimbas provide perfect conditions for sailing. As a result, one of the best ways to end a day on the island is on a cruise aboard the traditional dhow, sharing a toast at sunset.

Gorongosa National Park

Gorongosa National Park is in the Great Rift Valley region, known as the heart of Mozambique. All its life and exuberance are contemplated by a great natural diversity. The park has savannas, tropical and also mountainous forests, Lake Urema and crystalline waterfalls.

Discovered by tourism in the 1960s, the park unfortunately fell into decay in 1983 due to the civil war that engulfed the country, where poor care and the high incidence of ivory trafficking led to the loss of 90% of the region's wildlife and native plants.

Fortunately, in 2008, the Mozambican government and the Carr Foundation created the “Gorongosa Project” in order to rescue the wild population and the local ecosystem. Today the park has zebras, lions, buffaloes, wildebeests, impalas and other animals that have consequently encouraged safari tourism in the region in a sustainable way.
