Destination Myanmar

The country's beauty is compounded by the enchantment of glittering stupas, rice fields, enigmatic ruined temples, and picturesque mountain paths.
Discover Myanmar
A beautiful and culturally rich country cursed for decades with a brutally oppressive regime, Myanmar (Burma) has been featured in newspapers in recent years for its steps toward democracy. After the relaxation and removal of a fifteen-year tourist boycott led by the National League for Democracy - Myanmar's main political opposition party - the number of tourists increased, however, the infrastructure did not follow such growth to accommodate demand. Still, the current fascinating moment adds enchantment to Myanmar's brilliant stupas, abundant rice fields, enigmatic ruined temples, and picturesque mountain paths.
More memorable, however, are the encounters with people, eager to introduce their country and culture to foreigners. Whether it's an exchange of smiles with a stranger, a quick chat with a tuk-tuk driver, or a lively conversation with a group of new friends, interactions with the local population have shaped the vision of many foreigners who already consider Myanmar to be the friendliest country in the world.
Touristic spots
Most visitors begin their exploration of Myanmar in Yangon (Rangoon), the former capital that makes a great introduction to the country, with colonial-era buildings, some of the country's best restaurants, and the unmissable Shwedagon Paya - the country's holiest Buddhist site. Relatively few tourists go to the southeast of Yangon, other than to see the precariously balanced Golden Rock in Kyaiktiyo, but Mawlamyine and Hpa-an are great places for those looking to explore caves filled with Buddhist art, sleep in a mountaintop monastery, or visit home workshops.
To the west of Yangon are a handful of beaches, with Ngapali being the most highly regarded, but Chaung Tha and Ngwe Saung much more affordable. Most travelers head north to Mandalay, the center of “Upper Burma” and the base to visit the ruins of several ancient capitals; or to Bagan, further west, with its stunning plains covered with temples.
To the east of Mandalay is Kalaw, the starting point for some of the most beautiful hikes. A hike from Kalaw is one way to reach the magnificent Inle Lake, with its stilt villages and famous “paddleleg” fishermen. A trip along the Ayeyarwady River (Irrawaddy) around Katha and Bhamo offers an excellent opportunity to get to know the locals, as well as the hiking routes around Hsipaw, which pass through ethnic minority villages.
Best time to go to Myanmar
From October onwards, the rains decrease; the best time to visit most of the country is from November to February, when the temperatures are relatively manageable.
Myanmar has a tropical climate, with the southwestern monsoon bringing rain from May to October. Roads may become impassable, especially in the period from July to September. The central plains, however, receive only a fraction of the rain that falls on the coast and the Ayeyarwady Delta. From March to May, the country becomes very hot, especially in the dry zone of the central plains, with temperatures reaching marks above 40°C in Bagan and Mandalay.
