Between Canyons and Millennia: Serra da Capivara

Explore one of the world's most fascinating archaeological destinations on a journey through the Serra da Capivara National Park, recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site.
Day 1: Petrolina - São Raimundo Nonato
Arrival at Petrolina Airport - Senator Nilo Coelho. Private transfer to the hotel in São Raimundo Nonato. Accommodation for 4 nights with breakfast.
Petrolina, located on the banks of the São Francisco River, is one of the main centers of the Northeastern hinterland and the gateway to this journey through the interior of Brazil. The city stands out for its strong wine and fruit production, in addition to its cultural and economic relevance for the San Francisco Valley region. In addition to its historical and archaeological importance, Serra da Capivara provides an experience of connection with nature, sertanejo culture and the preserved landscapes of the Northeastern interior.
2nd day: São Raimundo Nonato - SERRA BRANCA - PERNA CIRCUIT - BAIXÃO DAS ANDORINHAS - SÃO RAIMUNDO NONATO
After breakfast, drive to the Serra Branca region, located approximately 40 km away. At the site, start of the trail with a visit to Olho d'Água, an ancient fountain used by residents of the region before the park was created.
Along the way, visit the historic sites linked to the maniçobeiros, workers responsible for the extraction of latex from maniçoba, an activity that had economic relevance in the region. During the walk, archaeological sites with records of rock paintings will be visited.
Snack stop during the trail. Then, drive to the Perna Circuit, an area that brings together sites with paintings depicting scenes from the daily lives of the peoples who inhabited the region.
In the late afternoon, visit the Baixão das Andorinhas, a canyon known for the swallows flying at dusk. Return to the hotel after the visit.
Day 3: São Raimundo Nonato - hombu trail - Boqueirão da Pedra Furada - São Raimundo Nonato Breakfast at the hotel.
Soon after, a trip of approximately 30 km to the Hombu Trail. The tour begins with a visit to the home of the Neco Coelho family, one of the first families to settle in the region.
Along the trail, visits to archaeological sites with rock paintings, in addition to the observation of the typical Caatinga vegetation and the natural adaptations of local species, such as different varieties of cacti.
Stop for lunch (not included) in the community of Sítio do Mocó, at a regional cuisine restaurant. After lunch, visit the Nature Museum and then visit the Boqueirão da Pedra Furada, an area that brings together archaeological sites and the rock formation known as Pedra Furada, one of the park's main landmarks.
In the late afternoon, go to the Visitor Center to begin the evening visit to the Toca do Boqueirão da Pedra Furada site, a wall with records of rock paintings and a place where important archaeological remains related to the human presence on the American continent were found.
Return to the hotel.
Day 4: São Raimundo Nonato - Capivara Gorge - Ceramics - Sítio do Meio - Museum of American Man - São Raimundo Nonato Breakfast at the hotel.
Departure towards the Capivara Gorge Circuit, located approximately 42 km away. The region was one of the first places visited by archaeologist Niède Guidon at the beginning of her research in Serra da Capivara.
The circuit includes several archaeological sites with records of cave paintings. The visit begins at Toca Encantada do Pajaú, a shelter with paintings depicting scenes from the daily lives of the peoples who inhabited the region. Then, visit Toca do Inferno and Toca do Barro, a shelter formed from a rock wall with preserved archaeological records.
Continue to the Papagaio's Lair, the first site catalogued by researchers in the region, where human skeletons dating back thousands of years were found. After the visits, drive to the village of Barreirinho for lunch (not included).
In the afternoon, visit the Serra da Capivara Ceramics factory and, later, to the Sítio do Meio Circuit, a rock shelter where important archaeological remains were found, such as polished stone utensils and ceramic fragments dating back thousands of years.
Closing the day, visit the Museum of the American Man. Return to the hotel and overnight.
Day 5: São Raimundo Nonato - PETROLINA
Breakfast at the hotel and check-out. Private transfer to Petrolina Airport - Senador Nilo Coelho.
