Destination Argentina

The proximity and diversity of activities and scenarios make Argentina one of the favorite destinations for Brazilian travelers.

A trip to Argentina rewards its visitors with natural wonders and one of the most elegant capitals in the world, Buenos Aires. Stretching from the Tropic of Capricorn to the tip of Antarctica, Argentina encompasses an impressive diversity of terrains. You can find everything: from lush wetlands to Tierra del Fuego, the archipelago at the end of the world. Its most emblematic landscapes are the Pampas plains and the dramatic Patagonian steppe.

Argentina is the eighth largest country in the world by area, with a population of around 45 million inhabitants - one of the least densely populated countries on the planet. About 97% of Argentines are of European origin, mainly of Spanish or Italian descent. The friendly, effusive, and playful personality of its people is famous around the world.

The passion for soccer and the fanaticism for its main clubs and players, Boca Juniors and River Plate being the most popular, fill stadiums and provoke demonstrations of the population's love for their teams at matches and on the streets.

Well known for its beef, Argentina is also one of the main producers of wine, wheat, fruits and vegetables. It has a vibrant film industry and has won the Oscar twice for best foreign language film for La Historia Oficial in 1985 and El Secreto de sus Ojos in 2010.

Other peculiarities of Argentina:

  • The typical cuisine that ranges from roast to mate, including regional dishes and snacks with Dulce de Leite;
  • Traditional dances such as tango, born in Buenos Aires in the 19th century;
  • Regional folklore, with different forms of dances;
  • Typical games such as Truco or horse games on the outskirts of the city that reveal the strong influence of Spanish culture and persistence of ancient traditions.

Touristic spots

The landscapes in Argentina are as beautiful as they are diverse. From the Iguazu Falls to the spectacular Perito Moreno glacier; from whale watching on the Valdés Peninsula to the beautiful lakes and mountains surrounding Bariloche.

Buenos Aires

A gateway city for many visitors, Buenos Aires is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city. Of all the South American capitals, Buenos Aires offers the most. Influenced by major European cities, Buenos Aires has its own distinct personality, enhanced by traditions, including soccer, tango, and mate. The modern and traditional charms of Argentina's capital are immediately identified by visitors.

What to do in Buenos Aires

Although it is a large city in size, the city center is compact and the proximity between the main tourist spots means brief commutes. In the neighborhoods of San Nicolás and Monserrat are Calle Florida, the elegant Avenida de Mayo, and the bohemian café culture of Avenida Corrientes. Beyond the revitalized docks of Puerto Madero, to the east of the center, is the Ecological Reserve, one of the city's green lungs.

Some of the city's attractions include: the Plaza de Mayo; the Teatro Colón; the avenue 9 de Julio, where the Obelisk is located; the neighborhood of San Telmo, with its cutting-edge artists, antiques market and places to watch tango performances; the La Boca neighborhood, intrinsically linked to its soccer team, Boca Juniors; the French-style palaces of Retiro; shopping in the Palermo neighborhood.

Ushuaia

Ushuaia is the capital of the province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and Islas del Atlántico Sur. Argentina is home to most of the wild and sparsely populated areas of Patagonia (the rest is in Chile). These are arid steppe lands surrounded by the southern part of the Andes - a row of majestic volcanoes and rugged peaks interspersed with deep glacial lakes. On the Atlantic side of Patagonia, the Valdés Peninsula is a must-see for its marine fauna, including whales, elephant seals, and orcas.

Summer is also the high season for trips to Patagonia, although in winter there is a movement of travelers looking for activities such as skiing and snowboarding. In spring and fall, the colors in the Tierra del Fuego National Park are wonderful.

The Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, on the bustling Beagle Channel, is the image of Ushuaia most recognized by visitors. Other points of interest include: the Maritime and Presidio Museum, the National Park, Paso Garibaldi and the Emerald Lagoon.

El Calafate

El Calafate is the gateway for those who wish to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier. The city that was once just a remote settlement in Patagonia has become a city with around 25,000 inhabitants, offering excellent hotels and services of all kinds. Throughout the city, visitors observe the typical architecture of the region, with exposed wooden buildings.

Among the region's attractions are: navigating Lake Argentino; discovering the glacial formations that descend from the Patagonian Ice Field (the third largest ice sheet on the planet, after the poles); peaks, forests and lakes, especially Cerro Fitz Roy in El Chaltén and Cerro Torre.

Bariloche

Well known to Brazilian travelers, Bariloche's unbeatable beauty has made it synonymous with tourism. The city is located within the Nahuel Huapi National Park, next to the Andes mountain range. In 2012 it was declared the national capital of adventure tourism and in 2015 the national chocolate capital.

In winter, travelers seek out the city for activities such as skiing and snowboarding. Catedral, the largest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere, is the permanent venue for ski and snowboard championships. In summer, adventure tourism and water sports are the main attraction, with lakes that become resorts.

Mendoza

Mendoza, located in the Andes Mountains, is known as the International Capital of Wine and cannot be left out for those interested in exploring this product so important in Argentine production. The province is responsible for 70% of the country's wine production.

While the most sought after wineries are the oldest, some of the best vintages currently come from producers with the latest equipment, including storage tanks lined with epoxy resin and computerized temperature controls. They tend to concentrate on the production of varietal wines, the main grape varieties being Riesling, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay, for the whites, and Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec, for the reds. Malbec is often considered the Argentine grape par excellence, offering rich fruity wines, with notes of blackcurrant and plum, which pair perfectly with the famous Argentinian red meats.

Best time to go to Argentina

Argentina can be visited all year round, however, due to its length, when planning a trip, it is important to highlight the climate in the region to make the most of it according to the activities or the desired itinerary.

Spring (September to November) is the best time to go to Argentina, when the weather is very good almost everywhere. Obviously it will be colder in the far south.

Summer (December to February) is the period when you can climb the highest peaks in the Andes, such as Aconcagua. It's also the most reliable time of year to visit Tierra del Fuego, although it can snow at any time. Between December and January, Buenos Aires is hot and humid. It is recommended to avoid the north of the country, as temperatures can be quite high and roads flooded by severe storms.

Fall (March to May) is another great time to visit Argentina, especially if it includes the provinces of Mendoza and San Juan for wine harvests. Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego are also very beautiful, with the changes in the color of the leaves of the trees.

Winter (June to August) is the season for those who seek to venture onto the Andean ski slopes. Blizzards can isolate Patagonian cities in winter and many places in the region are closed from April to October. The north of the country, on the other hand, is quite pleasant.
