Loi Krathong coincides with another very famous festival in Thailand, Lanna or Yi Peng — celebrated annually, it is part of the festival of lights in the north of the country that aims to show respect for the Buddha.

It usually happens in mid-November and according to local belief, releasing illuminated flashlights is putting an end to a person's bad luck or misfortune, especially if the flashlight disappears from view before the fire goes out.
