Destination Philippines

White sand beaches, volcano slopes and chocolate-colored hills: traveling around the Philippines is discovering a new landscape every day.

Discover the Philippines

A destination that invites travelers to slow down. Relaxing by the beach, discovering a cacao farm, the side of a volcano, rice plantations and Spanish churches: there's a lot to visit in the Philippines, after all, the country has more than 7,000 tropical islands.

Although it is located in Southeast Asia, the Philippines has a predominantly Catholic population, due to Spanish colonization and this makes some of the cultural customs more similar to Latin American countries than to their neighbors.

Tourism in the Philippines offers endless opportunities, here it's up to the traveler to relax, explore the destination and enjoy the local cuisine.

Sights - What to do in the Philippines

Manilla

The country's capital and main city, Manila has resisted wars, natural disasters, and social inequality. Still, it thrives as a major Asian metropolis with its skyscrapers and gleaming malls.

The city center maintains the walls and Spanish buildings that tell of the colonial past, but today modernity is everywhere in Manila, whether in the art galleries and the lively indie music scene, or in the artisanal markets and original cafés scattered around the corners.

What to do in Manila

  • The walled city of Manila is home to some historic sites such as Fort Santiago, the Manila Cathedral and the San Augustin Church (17th century), as well as colonial houses built by the Spanish.
  • To enjoy Filipino-Spanish cuisine, the tip is to visit the Ilustrado restaurant, one of the most traditional restaurants in the city. It is located in Intramuros.
  • The oldest chinatown in the world is in Manila. Binondo is the neighborhood where visitors will find temples and churches, shops of all kinds and art deco buildings on Rua Escolta.

Boracay

The tropical island of Boracay is the most visited spot in the Philippines. Its enormous tourist boom made it necessary to close it in the year 2018. Today, restored and with an award-winning preservation policy, the island receives up to 5,000 visitors a day, who can enjoy its beautiful beaches and lively nights.

Things to do in Boracay

  • The famous White Beach beach is the island's main natural attraction and a mandatory stop for travelers. Similarly, the beaches of Puka and Diniwid are also good options for enjoying a sunny day by the sea.
  • A boat trip to neighboring islands completes the Boracay adventure. Crocodile Island is full of colorful corals and fish of rare species, and in Crystal Cove the traveler will find lush vegetation growing amidst caves and rock formations.
  • Boracay's nightlife is bustling and diverse. Among the options are beachfront parties, live music, and lively restaurants.

Palawan

With the smallest population among the most famous islands in the Philippines, Palawan has unexplored natural beauty. The rich marine life and the beautiful colorful corals common to be found in Southeast Asia can also be seen here, however the region reserves landscapes that make up calm waters and verdant forests.

Things to do in Palawan

  • Experience the charm of the small city of El Nido on a hike. Composed of three main streets (Rua Real, Rua Rizal and Rua Hama) it is possible to discover it in just one afternoon.
  • The emerald green waters of El Nido are worth a relaxing kayak ride. The activity is an option to popular boat trips and can even make for an “exclusive” visit to nearby beaches, if visited outside of tour boat hours.
  • Nagkalit-kalit is one of the waterfalls that deserve reserved time in the travel itinerary. With a beautiful natural pool among the rocks, it is just a 20-minute walk from the main road.

Bohol

Known for being home to Chocolate Hill and the Társian monkeys, Bohol is a tranquil island that has slowly managed to attract tourists' attention to its natural beauty.

Although it suffered great cultural loss with the earthquake in 2013, Bohol defends its distinct cultural heritage by rebuilding majestic Spanish churches.

Things to do in Bohol

  • With over a thousand hills spread over an area of 50km, the Chocolate Hills are the island's most popular tourist attraction. The ideal time to visit the region is in the dry season (November to May), as it is when the dry grass and hills reach the chocolate brown color that make them famous.
  • The second most visited attraction in Bohol, the Philippine Tarsier conservation center protects tarsian monkeys, a species endemic to Southeast Asia. As the species usually sleeps during the day, visitors are likely to find them in full sleep, otherwise they will be completely smitten by their big vibrant eyes.
  • Panglao Island is a tropical destination that, like El Nido and Boracay, has an intense nightlife. In addition, diving is a popular attraction in the region.

Best time to go to the Philippines

The months of November to February are the most suitable for a trip to the Philippines, as the temperatures are more pleasant at this time.

Characterized by a hot and humid climate, the country is guided by the monsoon climate, being:

  • Dry season: November to May.
  • Rainy season: June to October, which may extend to December.

It is important to remember that the weather can be unpredictable in the Philippines and between the months of August and October the country usually receives around ten typhoons every year. Although the population is widely notified in advance, typhoons can occur both earlier and later than expected.
