Northern Lights in Iceland

DAY 1: KEFLAVIK - Reykjavík
Arrival at Keflavik airport and transfer by shuttle bus to the hotel in Reykjavik.

Accommodation for 1 night, with breakfast.


DAY 2: Reykjavik - BORGARFJORDUR -
BORGANES Breakfast and check-out at the hotel. Meeting with the guide for a panoramic tour of the city's main sights, such as the Cathedral and the Parliament.

After the tour, head west to stop in Borganes to visit The Settlement Center interactive museum.

Continue to the district of Borgarfjordur known as “Saga Valley” because of its many important historical events. Opportunity to climb the Grabrok volcano crater and to visit Deildartunguhver, the most powerful thermal spring in Europe.

Finally, an opportunity to admire Hraunfossar, a series of waterfalls that flow at a distance of about 900 meters from Hallmundarhraun.

In the afternoon, attend a lecture about the Northern Lights and, in the evening, weather permitting, go hunting for the Northern Lights.

Accommodation for 2 nights in Borgarnes, with breakfast.


DAY 3: BORGANES - SNAEFELLSNES - BORGANES
After breakfast at the hotel, departure to explore the Saefellsnes Peninsula, known as “the snowy mountain peninsula”. A mountain range visible along the peninsula, with active and dormant volcanoes.

Visit the fishing village of Grundarfjordur, a place with an impressive coastline and landscapes with mountains, lakes and waterfalls. From the bay, you can see Kirkjufell, a 463-meter mountain, considered the most photographed mountain in the country.

Continuation of the tour to the fishing villages of Arnarstapi and Hellnar for a visit.

Finally, visit the Vatnshellir cave, to descend 35 meters deep and about 200 meters into the lava tube under the Snefellsjokull glacial volcano. On the way back to the hotel, guidance with practical tips on how to photograph the Northern Lights.

In the evening, weather permitting, head out to hunt for the Northern Lights.


DAY 4: BORGARNES - GOLDEN CIRCLE - HELLA
Breakfast and check-out at the hotel. Journey along the Hvalfjordur Fjord. The first stop will be at an Icelandic wool store.

Continue to Thingvellir National Park, a place of great historical interest in Viking culture and considered a Unesco World Heritage Site. Then, travel the Golden Circle route with the opportunity to observe Geysir, a series of hot geysers gushing out.

Visit the Gullfoss waterfall, the most famous in Iceland. With a 32-meter drop, it falls directly into the canyon in two steps. The waters at Gullfoss come from the second largest glacier in Iceland, the Langjokull glacier.

In the afternoon, visit the Icelandic horse stable to learn about their unique qualities and stories, followed by a visit to a geothermal greenhouse.

Arrival in Hella, accommodation for 1 night, with breakfast.

In the evening, weather permitting, head out to hunt for the Northern Lights.


DAY 5: HELLA - KIRKJUBAEJARKLAUSTUR
After breakfast and check-out at the hotel, drive along the south coast. Visit the LAVA Center to improve knowledge about geology and active volcanoes.

Then visit the Skogar Folk Museum, with a collection of artifacts from Iceland's past. Nearby is the Skogafoss waterfall, with a 60-meter drop and one of the most impressive in the country.

In the afternoon, stroll to Reynisfjara, the dramatic black sand beach.

Continue to Kirkjubaejarklaustur, in the Vatnajok National Park region.

Accommodation for 2 nights, with breakfast.


DAY 6: KIRKJUBAEJARKLAUSTUR Breakfast at the hotel.
Travel to the glacial lagoon at Jokulsarlon and Diamond Beach, a volcanic sand beach.

In the afternoon, visit the small Hofskirkja Turf Church and free time in the Vatnajokull National Park, to enjoy the alpine environment and the largest glacier in Europe.

In the evening, a film about the Northern Lights is presented and then, if weather conditions permit, a trip out to hunt for the Northern Lights.

Optional activity suggestion (not included):

• Ice cave tour, lasting about 2 hours and 30 minutes, including a 4×4 car ride along the glacial lagoon in Jokulsarlon, a walk to the cave and a ride of about 1 hour inside the ice cave. Note: The minimum age for the tour is 10 years.

DAY 7: KIRKJUBAEJARKLAUSTUR - BLUE LAGOON - REYKJAVIK Breakfast and check-out at the hotel.
Journey across the Eldhraun lavas to reach the small village of Vik. Stop to take photos. The region's natural beauty ranges from the country's most famous and breathtaking waterfalls, such as Sljalandsfoss, a waterfall with a 60-meter drop, and to the black sand beaches that form a mystical landscape.

In the afternoon, go to the famous Blue Lagoon known for its water rich in fuming minerals and soft white silica mud that have healing effects on the skin. Long-time residents and visitors have enjoyed the benefits of bathing in the Blue Lagoon. Free time for a swim or simply relax.

At the end of the day, departure to Reykjavik and accommodation for 1 night, with breakfast.

DAY 8: REYKJAVIK - KEFLAVÍK
Breakfast and check-out at the hotel. Transfer by shuttle bus to the airport.
