Travel and tourism in Indochina
Called French Indochina until 1950, Indochina comprises Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, in a region formerly associated with France, initially within its empire and then within the French Union. The term Indochina refers to the mixture of Indian and Chinese influences in the region's culture.
During a lull in the fighting in 1949-50 of the conflict known as the First Indochina War, the French, in an attempt to keep their properties in the area, ratified separate treaties that recognized Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia as independent autonomous states within the French Union. Thus ended the conception that these states were united to form “French Indochina”. The leaders of the states were puppet rulers. Real independence came to the region only after the Geneva Conference of 1954, which finally put an end to the struggle between the French and the Viet Minh.
Although in the past they were considered a unit, the three countries of ancient Indochina form a culturally rich region, with the Khmer people of Cambodia being one of the oldest ethnic groups in Southeast Asia; Vietnamese cuisine, renowned for its delicious flavors, fresh products, vibrant spices, and local delicacies; the arts and architecture of Laos with strong influences from India, China, and the nation's rich indigenous traditions.
