Touristic spots
Tokyo
Tokyo, the capital of Japan, with a population of over 12 million, has been intensely westernized but still retains much of its old charm. Nikko is renowned for its architectural wonders and its panoramic beauty. Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park has the famous Mount Fuji as its center of attraction and is one of the basic tourist spots.
Kyoto
Kyoto was the capital of Japan for over a thousand years and during that period it became the guardian of many of the best examples of Japanese art, culture, religion, and thought. Kyoto can be reached in less than 3 hours by train from Tokyo, with the super express Shinkansen, or in just over an hour from Kansai International Airport, near Osaka. In the center is the Kyoto Imperial Palace, recognized as a high point for the simplicity of Japanese architecture. Nearby, is the richly ornamented Nijo Castle, home of the Tokugawa Shogun on his rare visits to the city.
Osaka
Osaka, 3 hours by superexpress train or an hour by plane from Tokyo, is the third largest city in Japan and the commercial and industrial center of western Japan. Located at the mouth of the Yodo River, Osaka has a network of canals that intersect under its many bustling streets, which plays an important role in the city's prosperity. As a traditional city, it takes great pride in being the birthplace of the Bunraku puppet theater. The absolute highlight is Osaka Castle, the largest in Japan, built in 1586 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The current five-story fortress, a copy of the original, contains many historical artistic objects and documents related to the Toyotomi family and ancient Osaka.
Hakone Mount Fuji
Hakone, an hour and a half train ride from Tokyo, is a famous hot spring area in the beautiful mountains that make up the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The main attraction is the Hakone Open-Air Museum, with hundreds of open-air sculptures. A cruise around Lake Ashi, which offers wonderful views of Mount Fuji, is a must. Mount Fuji, at 3,776 meters, is not only the highest mountain in Japan, but also the best-known symbol. In addition to being an easy climbing spot during the months of July and August, Mount Fuji is the center of a large natural recreational area that includes, to the north, the Fuji Five Lakes district, which offers great opportunities for hiking, boating, fishing, camping, and picnics.
Takayama
Takayama, just over two hours from Nagoya by express train, is an ancient castle city nestled in a valley surrounded by the Japanese Alps. It retains much of the atmosphere of ancient Japan. The entire city feels like a museum, equipped with numerous attractions, including a variety of small museums dedicated to traditional crafts, which incorporate the city's long tradition of excellence in craftsmanship.
Best time to go to Japan
There are two recommended seasons. The first is in spring, which, in addition to the mild temperatures, is the period in which the cherry trees bloom and is also when festivals such as the geisha dance in Kyoto (Miyako Odori) take place. The second season is autumn, also with pleasant temperatures and with less rainfall starting in October. The trees begin to change color and one of the most beautiful festivals takes place, the Takayama Matsuri, a World Heritage Site.
