Self-drive: Discovering Namibia

Windhoek, Okonjima Nature Reserve, Etosha National Park, Omaruru, Swakopmund, Sossusvlei

Explore Namibia on a 12-day self-drive itinerary, experiencing stunning landscapes and the country's rich wildlife.

Day 1: Windhoek
Arrival in Windhoek, pick-up of the automatic car at the rental office and drive to the hotel. Accommodation for 1 night, with breakfast.

Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, combines German colonial heritage with African influences. With a tranquil atmosphere, it stands out for its architecture, such as the Christuskirche, in addition to its vibrant museums and markets. The city is also the country's political, economic, and transportation hub.


Day 2: Windhoek - Okonjima
Nature Reserve
Breakfast and check-out at the hotel. Drive to Okonjima Nature Reserve. Accommodation for 1 night, with half board.

In the afternoon, visit the Cheetah Project, with a tour of the main center, the cheetah museum, a brief visit to the genetics laboratory and a presentation about the cheetah and cattle that live there.

Return to the lodge and have dinner at the hotel.

Day 3: OKONJIMA NATURE RESERVE - ETOSHA
NATIONAL PARK
Breakfast and check-out at the lodge. Drive to Etosha National Park. Accommodation for 2 nights, with breakfast.

Etosha National Park is one of the largest parks in Africa. Etosha owes its unique landscape to the basin of a generally dry lake of approximately 5000 km² and was named the first conservation area in Namibia in 1907 by the then German government. Of the 114 mammal species found in the park, several are quite particular to this region and are threatened with extinction, such as the black rhinoceros, the cheetah, and the black-faced impala.

Free afternoon for independent activities and safari through Etosha National Park, with your own vehicle (entrance fee to be paid locally).

Day 4 and day 5: ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK
Breakfast at the lodge. Dedicated safari days through Etosha National Park, with your own vehicle (entrance fee to be paid locally).


Day 6: ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK
Breakfast and check-out at the lodge. Full-day safari through Etosha National Park, with your own vehicle (entrance fee to be paid locally).

After the tour, drive to the lodge. Accommodation for 1 night at Eagle Tented Lodge, with breakfast and dinner.


Day 6: ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK - KAMANJAB - OMARURU
Breakfast and check-out at the hotel. Drive to accommodation in Omaruru, a former mission station. The city has great historical importance and has become an artistic hub for local crafts and small industries.

While traveling between cities, stop in Kamanjab to visit a Himba village, discovering local traditions and lifestyle, including the milking ceremony, the smoke bath, beliefs about the sacred fire, ancestors, and herbal medicine.

Arrival in Omaruru. Accommodation for 1 night, with breakfast.

DAY 7: OMARURU - SPITZKOPPE - SWAKOPMUND
After breakfast and check-out, transfer to Swakopmund
, one of the best-known vacation destinations on the Namibian coast. A former German colony, the city combines German and Namibian influences, with emphasis on colonial-era buildings.

While traveling between cities, stop in Spitzkoppe for a brief walk among the granite mountain rocks to observe the ancient paintings and engravings of the San (Bushmen) peoples.

Arrival in Swakopmud and accommodation for 2 nights, with breakfast.

DAY 8:
SWAKOPMUND
Free
day for independent activities.

Suggested optional activities (not included):

  • Kayak ride;
  • Whale, dolphin and seal watching cruise;
  • double skydiving;
  • Sand boarding: tour of the sand dunes on a board;
  • Visit to the Damara Living Museum, a museum that offers an immersive experience in the culture of the Damara people, highlighting traditions, dances, and crafts (entrance fee to be paid locally);
  • Visit Uis, a small mining city where you can see Brandberg, the highest peak in Namibia;
  • Visit the Cape Cross sea lion colony (entrance fee to be paid locally).



Day 9: SWAKOPMUND - SOSSUSVLEI
Breakfast and check-out at the lodge. Drive to Sossusvlei. Accommodation for 2 nights, with breakfast.

Between trips, we suggest stops in the Namib Naukluft National Park, considered the oldest desert in the world, and in Solitaire, a small city known for its renowned apple crumble.

  • From Swakopmud to Sossuvlei: 400 km.



Day 10: Sossusvlei
Breakfast at the hotel and free day for independent activities.

Suggested optional activities (not included):

  • Visit the world's highest sand dunes in Sossusvlei and Deadvlei to observe the sunrise or sunset, ideal for photographs;
  • Visit the Sesriem Canyon, formed millions of years ago by the Tsauchab River.



Day 11:
SOSSUSVLEI - windhoek
Breakfast and check-out. Driving to Windhoek. Accommodation for 1 night, with breakfast.

Day 12:
Windhoek
Breakfast and check-out at the lodge.

Drive to Windhoek airport and return of the rental car.
