São Luís, capital of the state of Maranhão, is located in the South Atlantic, between the bays of São Marcos and São José de Ribamar. It is located on the island of Upaon-Açu (Ilha Grande, named after the Tremembé Indians) and, in 1997, its Historic Center was listed by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site. The city preserves approximately 3,500 colonial buildings, spread over more than 220 hectares, including townhouses with viewpoints and facades covered with Portuguese tiles.
